Apparently Burma hasn’t been through enough conflict and suffering over the past few decades but, don’t worry, a Buddhist Monk by the name of Wirathu’s here to bring his country some more. Ironically coming from a religion that promotes peace, Wirathu has been preaching a lot of racist clap trap that Muslim’s are ‘savages and cold’, that they are all ‘extremists’ . His general conclusion is that they’re not very nice people and should therefore bugger off. Wirathu has been using classic social media tactics such as Facebook and YouTube to promote his Islamophobia meaning that even more people can hear his verbal diatribe against those of the Islamic Faith.
According to Wirathu, he ‘isn’t insulting Islam’. Now, I don’t know what you’ve heard about racism, but insulting a large collection of people due to their religion, skin colour or ethnicity is normally deemed as prejudice.
It’s all good though, because it’s all done in the name of national security and the interests of the true Burmese people. He’s even promoting a cause called 969, which consists of stickers used to define Buddhist cars, restaurants and business. Hang on a second… that sounds familiar… using a symbol or sign to denote and distance yourself from another religion or race of people. Methinks history might of heard that one before. It started the world’s most appalling atrocity.
It’s sad though isn’t it? Religion turning on religion, and yet we’ve been doing it since the dawn of time. Islam isn’t perfect. Far from it, but then neither is Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism or Hinduism or any other religion for that matter. Instead of promoting the message of love and peace that is the essence and fundamental core of the majority of the world’s religion, it’s been decided that intolerance and half beating the crap out of each other is the order of the day.
To end, here’s a lovely quote from Harper Lees’ to ‘Kill a Mockingbird’, it might be describing the wrong scenario, but the context, sentiment and meaning remain the same. Discrimination on the grounds of race and religion isn’t cool.
"You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men. There is not a person… who has never told a lie, who has never done an immoral thing."
