And the man responsible was Steven Frayne. Commonly known as Dynamo. From walking on the Thames to turning snow into diamonds, his TV show Dynamo: Magician Impossible made magic more chilled than the freezer compartment in an Eskimo’s fridge.
Hi, Dynamo! How does it feel to be ZOO’s Coolest Man of 2011?
The people have spoken. What more can I say? It must be true!
You’ve beaten guys like Prince Harry and Jenson Button. Why do you think people voted for you?
Have you seen Magician Impossible?
Fair point. Who do you think is currently the coolest man in Britain?
At the moment, I’d say it’s Ed Sheeran. I saw him last week and he’s incredible. He’s nominated for four Brits and he’ll definitely take three of them.
Not Paul Daniels, then? Who would win in a magic-off?
I reckon Houdini. Even though he’s supposedly not with us, I think it’s all a hoax. He’ll pop up some time.
2011 was a great year for you. What do you want to do in 2012?
It’s going to involve a lot of magic. And obviously I’ve got to continue being cool, now the ZOO readers have given me this award. Follow me on Twitter (@Dynamomagician), we’ll have some fun.
Were you always so cool? You do magic, so we’re guessing not…
I used to think I was. I don’t know what everyone else’s opinion was at the time. But obviously this year everybody else’s opinion is the same.
You’re now officially cool as ice. Could you ever submerge yourself in it like David Blaine?
Possibly. But to copy somebody else wouldn’t be cool, so I’ll just do my own thing. We’ve been coming up with some big plans at Dynamo HQ.
Who’s the coolest man you’ve ever performed to?
My Grandpa. He introduced me to magic and he’s the wisest and coolest man I know.
OK, while we’re on the subject of cool, do you like Coolio?
Gangsta’s Paradise is a classic.
What about Kool & The Gang?
Not really my era, but they’ve got “Kool” in their name, so they must be pretty cool.
Will you now buy Kuhl clothing?
Some of that stuff is pretty good, especially in England where it gets really cold. We’re in winter too, so if they want to send me some free stuff…
What are your thoughts on Heinrich Kuhl? He was a German zoologist.
[Laughs] He’s actually pretty cool. He’s got specimens and mammals named after him. That’s pretty cool, right?
Lastly, what do you want to say to the ZOO readers who voted for you?
It’s great to be Britain’s Coolest Man, especially because there was such tough competition. Thanks very much. This is awesome!
