Gig Review: The Leisure Society @ Brudenell Social Club - 'Musical OCD at its best!'

Written by

You only have to listen to one track by the Leisure Society to discover how meticulous, precise and note perfect this band is; they are the definition of musical OCD. Currently on their UK tour celebrating the release of their album ‘Alone Aboard the Ark’, The Leisure Society tackled Leeds on a Sunday evening and their venue of choice was the hidden musical gem that is the Brudenell Social Club.

We were surprised the place wasn't busier, to be honest; however, they had attracted a dedicated crowd who were all eager for the band to kick things off. Opening with ‘Another Sunday Psalm’, which is the first track on their album, the six-some eased the crowd into a set that was at some times very chilled, and others surprisingly upbeat. Much like the technical ability demonstrated on their albums, their live performance was equally immaculate. Despite a couple of technical issues, the band presented to a fully appreciative crowd a vast array of instruments played expertly and passionately, leaving everyone stunned into silence. The highlight of the night, in our opinion, was the live performance of ‘All I Have Seen’, which saw its unique ‘do be do be do be doooo’s’ landing a smile on everyone with a heart's face. The fantastic thing about this band is how much better they are when live as opposed to recorded, but, don’t get me wrong, their album is still stellar. The band played material new and old much to the appeal of the crowd before finishing with ‘Forever Shall We Wait’ and leaving the stage, to soon return for an encore.

Christian Hardy joked with the crowd for most of the set, which was a nice touch to a relaxed Sunday evening set, before announcing that this show had in fact been the best of the tour so far (we are sure this is said at every gig we attend #jussayin) but is nice to hear nonetheless!

All in all a great gig. Well Done!
